Beauty- Nobody Can Define It

Call me old fashion and repetitive, but beauty is within yourself. Days, weeks, and sometimes months go by without us reflecting on how gorgeous we are.

I recently stumbled upon this 2010 interview between Jessica Simpson and Oprah Winfrey discussing Jessica’s Vh1 show called “The Price of Beauty.” However, the show was not the interesting part, but more the genuine real words that pertained to Jessica’s weight.

“The pressure that women feel to be beautiful, the pressure that the media puts on women it’s so unfair and it’s so disgusting,” says Jessica. “Nobody else can define it but myself. Nobody’s words, nobody’s compliments, nobody’s love, it’s all what I have within myself. I really don’t care what people say.”

Check it…

Besides loving her beautiful words, I couldn’t help but plug in a new shoe within the Jessica Simpson Collection.

Which Blogging Platform Should I Use?

63% of people have a social media resolution for 2012… mine was CoffeeandHeelsBlog.com —60 blog posts and I’m obsessed! Many ask what platform I am using or how they should start their own blog. Excuse the tech talk, but I do not know a lick of coding whatsoever–blogging can be as basic or as complex as you would like. Forget the jibberish 23035ssss4<239sgjlden>9058<der.

I use WordPress because it’s very popular and pretty basic. So is Tumblr. Of course, these two platforms are very different.WordPress can be hosted by WordPress or self-hosted on your own server and offers an immense amount of control. Tumblr is only hosted by Tumblr and is kind of a cross between blogging and Twitter. If you were only choosing between the two, you’d go with WordPress if you wanted to write more long-form posts and Tumblr if you just wanted to post neat things you find online (or, on occasion, create yourself). But you’re not choosing between just two platforms. You have a wide number of options that do the same thing as these two platforms, plus you’ve got a variety of choices in the middle. Posterous, for example, is very similar to both.

Before you take a look at your options, there are a few things you’re going to want to answer these questions (or at least keep them in mind as you read your options:

  1. Do I want to install, configure, and host my blog myself, or would I rather rely on a hosted service?
  2. Do I want to create my own blog theme, or am I satisfied with using or customizing an existing theme?
  3. Do I want to be able to install custom plug-ins or am I satisfied with the functionality that is built-in to the platform I choose?
  4. Will I be writing more long-form posts or posting cool things I find online? Or do I need to be able to do both?
  5. Do I want others to be able to comment on my post and interact with my content in a social way, or do I just want to be able to have a place to post my writing where people can read it and nobody can bother me?
  6. Am I willing to pay for this blogging platform?

Your Blogging Platform Options

This is, by no means, a full list of your options, but rather a list of the ones that cover the majority of blogging needs. Each option comes with a brief explanation of its strengths and what type of blogger it would benefit most.

Tumblr

Which Blogging Platform Should I Use?

Tumblr is a free social blogging platform that’s designed to take most of the effort out of actually blogging. Initially, blogging meant writing. On Tumblr, it means sharing something cool that you found online and occasionally attaching a caption. That doesn’t mean Tumblr can’t handle original content as well, but it’s not designed for anyone who is looking to create a long-form blog. If you simply want to share neat stuff and have a social network built-in to your blog so you can easily interact with other users, Tumblr is the way to go.

Asaph
Which Blogging Platform Should I Use?

Asaph is a microblog platform like Tumblr that you host yourself. It’s very, very simple. You add content via a bookmarklet. You can create your own themes or use the few that are included. If you like the idea of Tumblr but want an open-source option so you have full control, Asaph is what you’re looking for.

Posterous Spaces
Which Blogging Platform Should I Use?

If Tumblr is a bit too simple for you, but you still want simple, Posterous Spaces is a great choice. It simply lets you post what you want and interprets the content you provide it. You can post from the Posterous site, but you can also just email everything you want to put on your blog. It’ll turn photos into galleries and convert video into a player as well. It’s a great option if you want simplicity, don’t need a lot of control, but need the versatility to post short- and long-form content alike.

Squarespace

Which Blogging Platform Should I Use?

Squarespace is a paid blogging platform that offers easily customizable themes, as well as the option for people well-versed in CSS to create their own. Squarespace is more versatile than your average blogging platform, however, as it’s completely capable of creating web sites as well. The entire interface is web-based, and it’s pretty easy to learn. (If you need help learning they offer a great set of tutorials.) Basically, Squarespace was designed to create really nice web sites very quickly and easily without the need for the end user to have to figure out where to host their software, how to install it, and how to best set it up. As a result you pay for that convenience—a minimum of $12 per month and lose some control over what you can do with your blog/web site and how it can be customized. That said, if you’re only looking to host one site and you want to make something more complex than your programming skills allow, Squarespace is the platform for you.

Which Blogging Platform Should I Use?

WordPress is pretty well-known as the most popular blogging software around. It has that reputation because it is really great. It’s easy to get your blog started if you choose a hosting service, and even if you host WordPress yourself there are hosts (such asDreamHost) that offer one-click installations of the software. WordPress offers over one-thousand free themes, and there are many great themes you can buy. It’s also easy to create your own theme, even if you don’t know much about writing code. (You will need to learn a little CSS, though.) If you do know how to code, however, you can add custom functions to your themes, create plug-ins, and use WordPress to do virtually anything you want. It’s a very strong platform and always a solid choice for those reasons. If you’re looking to write more long-form posts and create a more traditional blog without too much effort, WordPress is probably your best option. While it isn’t designed for short-form blogging, it’s certainly versatile enough to work that way if you take the time to customize it.

Habari

Which Blogging Platform Should I Use?
Habari is an excellent, lesser-known blogging platform written in PHP. It’ll require manual installation and a lot of work on your part if you want a completely custom blog—and you will, because the existing theme options could be a bit better. Although Habari is not as popular as WordPress, it still has plenty of plug-ins and an amazing amount of functionality built-in. It offers one of the best admin sections/post editors you’ll ever use and includes full keyboard control. It’s the most versatile and customizable solutions of anything on this list, but that doesn’t mean it’s easy. Habari isn’t difficult to use, but to get the most out of it you’ll want some programming experience. If you want full control over your blog with the help of a great content management system, Habari is the way to go.

Hope this helps you make your decision. Happy blogging!

Career Ladies Must Read

I may blog about fluffy things like cupcakes, nail polish, and shoes at time,  but all fluff aside I’m always about career and self worth first and foremost. I’d love to share a great article written by @AmyJoMartin who is very well know in the digital world. She has built her own company, Digital Royalty, and also known for showing athletes like Shaquille O’neal how to tweet. With over a million twitter followers, she was also featured in Vanity Fair’s controversial article “America’s Tweethearts.

I’m not going to join a cult, sleep in a tent, or scream about woman’s rights but I do relate to this stellar article. Sending Positive Tweets to Amy on this one! #GoAmy #coffeeandheels

Dear Fellow Women,

Being a woman isn’t a business handicap. At the end of the day, we’re all graded based on a performance card. Men and women. Confidence, action and results are tightly related regardless of gender. If we believe we are inferior, we will be. If we believe we have a disadvantage, we will. It will impact our level of confidence, which impacts actions, and therefore results will suffer.

Until we start bringing the confidence, action and results (numbers) we aren’t going to get a seat at the boardroom table. Men are simply more successful when it comes to business. Yes, I just said that. Here’s why:

Studies show that men attribute their success to their own abilities and women attribute their success to external factors such as their mentors, outside help, etc. Women don’t own it. Men do.

Here’s how WE can change this:

  • Own It. It’s time. If we don’t have the confidence to take a shot at what we want in the business world, there’s a 100 percent chance we will fail. Basic math. Lack of confidence plus lack of action equals zero opportunity for success. It’s a game of confidence, action and results.
  • Innovate our approach. Change the game. We have to innovate our approach and be fearless enough to color outside the lines and not care what everyone inside the lines thinks. Society’s templates are often obsolete and antiquated. As a single thirty-two year old who lives by herself something must be wrong, right? Nope. I’m simply a happy person who hasn’t conformed. You have to be willing to face some adversity if you want to innovate your game. The ROI is worth it.
  • Keep our eye on the ball. Frequently, people ask me, “So this is your company?” with a confused look that a semi-young female could make moves in the world of business. Do you think they would ask the question to a male who has done the same? It doesn’t matter. Who cares. It never occurred to me to be distracted by these types of comments. Low ROI.
  • Get out of our own way. I’ve attended and spoken at many business conferences designed for women. These are business conferences, not supportive cry-on-the-stage-and-talk-about-how-tough-it-is-to-be-a-business-women conferences. Stop with the stereotype gender fluff in business settings. Focus on what you can control for better ROI.

The chip on our shoulder is chipping away at our ability to change the uneven percentages. We are simply getting in our own way.

If someone has an issue because you’re successful, driven or even because you haven’t conformed to society’s template of “womanhood,”  fine. That’s their problem and it’s none of your business what they think about you. In fact, it has nothing to do with business so spend your time focused on making a difference in your own world of business. Joining that distracting game or conversation admits there is relevance. In my opinion that’s a waste of mental space. We only have so much square footage upstairs in our minds and it’s valuable real estate. Own it.

Here’s why I’m so passionate about this message: Fifty percent of our leaders should be women. The world would be a better place if the gender percentages evened out. This generation of women is programmed and cultured to make a difference. It’s time we dismiss the chip on our shoulder, step up to the plate and start chipping away at the uneven percentages with more confidence, action and results.

We can’t do this on our own. It takes all of us to own it.

Wireless Headphones

Hi Technology Geeks! I found a the coolest gizmo gadget that may rock your gym session a littler longer than expected…wireless headphones by Jaybird.

These Bluetooth headphones also come in less neon colors, so if you’re not really loving that trend, you’re still in luck.  Plus, with these headphones, you don’t have to deal with any of those unattractive cords.

The wide band might not appeal to absolutely everyone, but it does still stick with that 80′s feel.   On the side of most of their headphones they include buttons to control your music.  Plus, to finish off the deal there is an integrated mic for making phone calls.  You can purchase a pair of these for $99.

A new conversation piece for sure!

Sweet Tangy Chicken (4 ingredients only)

After a long day in the office, career ladies may lack some kitchen skills so I wanted to post an easy peasy recipe for all those who need some extra help.  And this is only a 4 ingredient dish that will become one of your go-to dishes.   You can make ahead first thing in the morning up to the point of baking, place in the refrigerator, then just pop in the oven for a little over an hour, add a side and a tossed green salad.

When your done  you can serve it up and act like you are worn slap out from working so hard. Take all the compliments gracefully. You deserve it.

Ingredients:

8 chicken thighs  – You can use a whole chicken or other parts. (Pics are thighs)

1 package dry french onion soup mix

1 (8 oz bottle) Russian dressing (I prefer Wishbone Russian dressing)

1 small jar of apricot preserves or about a cupful.

Directions:

Mix all ingredients, except chicken, in a bowl.

Salt and pepper the chicken.

Pour sauce over chicken and make sure it’s coated well.

Roast uncovered at 400 degrees for 1 hour to 1 hour and 15 minutes until chicken is done. Baste several times during cooking. This is the way the chicken will look when done.

What You Wish You’d Known Before Your Interview

Career.Coffee.Heels. In that order please!

A dream job interview and a one way ticket to Los Angeles were the two things that I had to risk when interviewing for my career. I got the job the next day, and started the next day after.

In the economic state today and my father being a recruiter, I find it in my bones to helping out friends or colleagues with resumes, job searches, and interview tips. Timing, luck, karma, work, persistence certainly play into finding the perfect career… but I also found this helpful interviewing chart called “What You Wish You’d Known Before Your Interview.”

Good Luck and Dream Big!
